I worked with Searu, Alex Bygrave and Kenjiro Matsuo on the musical robots for Yuri Suzuki and will.i.am’s “Pyramidi” installation, featured in the Barbican’s Digital Revolution exhibition.
As well as consulting on the design of the guitar robot, I wrote a standalone macOS app to convert MIDI messages sent from Cubase to OSC messages to control the robots. The other robots were a Rhodes piano and a drum kit. Betraying my guitarist roots, the Rhodes was my favourite.
As the piece of music was being worked on in parallel, the software needed to be flexible, allowing routing of any number of tracks to the robots, as well as providing value mapping and latency controls to adapt the data to the physical characteristics of the robots.
